UK Citizen Schengen FAQ

How long can a UK citizen stay in Europe?

Since Brexit, UK citizens can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

Does the EES apply to UK citizens?

Yes. As non-EU nationals, UK citizens must register biometrics and have their entry and exit tracked automatically by the new EES system from April 2026.

Does time in Ireland count towards the 90 days?

No. The UK and Ireland are part of the Common Travel Area. Time spent in Ireland does not count towards your 90-day Schengen limit.

Can I get a visa to stay longer than 90 days?

Yes, but you must apply for a national visa (such as a long-stay D visa) for a specific country, like the Non-Lucrative Visa in Spain or the D7 visa in Portugal.

What happens if I overstay?

Overstaying can result in fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of euros, and potentially a ban on entering the Schengen Area.
