All 29 Schengen Countries: Complete List 2026

The Schengen Area is a zone where 29 European countries have abolished their internal borders, allowing unrestricted movement of people. For non-EU tourists, these 29 countries act as a single country for visa purposes, meaning your 90-day limit applies collectively across all of them.

The Complete List of Schengen Countries (as of 2026)

There are currently 29 member states in the Schengen Area. The most recent additions were Bulgaria and Romania, who fully integrated into the land borders in late 2024.

Microstates

While not officially signatories of the Schengen Agreement, three European microstates have open borders with their Schengen neighbors and are treated as part of the Schengen Area for practical travel purposes:

• 🇸🇲 San Marino (via Italy)
• 🇻🇦 Vatican City (via Italy)

Note: Andorra is NOT part of Schengen. You must go through border control to enter from France or Spain.

Common Confusions: EU vs. Schengen

The biggest mistake travelers make is assuming the European Union (EU) and the Schengen Area are the exact same list of countries. They are not.

In the EU, but NOT in Schengen:

• Ireland: Has its own visa policy. Time spent here does not count towards your 90 Schengen days.
• Cyprus: Legally bound to join Schengen in the future, but currently outside of it. It has its own 90-day limit.

In Schengen, but NOT in the EU:

Four countries are part of the border-free zone but are not in the European Union:

• Iceland
• Liechtenstein
• Norway
• Switzerland

Because these are Schengen countries, time spent skiing in Switzerland or hiking in Norway deducts from your 90-day limit.
