Schengen Visa for Indians: Complete Guide 2026

20 May 2026 By Schengen90Days Team

India is one of the fastest-growing sources of European tourists, with millions of Indians visiting the Schengen Area every year for tourism, business, and to visit family. Unlike many other nationalities, Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa — but the process is manageable when you know what to expect.

Do Indians Need a Visa for Schengen?

Yes. Indian passport holders are not on the Schengen visa-free list. You must apply for a Schengen visa before traveling.

This applies regardless of whether you’re visiting France, Germany, Italy, Spain, or any other of the 29 Schengen countries. One Schengen visa covers the entire zone.

Types of Schengen Visa for Indians

Type C — Short Stay Visa (Most Common)

This is the standard tourist or business visa.

  • Maximum stay: 90 days in any 180-day period
  • Single entry: One entry only
  • Multiple entry: Multiple entries within the visa’s validity period
  • Duration: Validity period set by the issuing country (typically 3 months to 5 years)

Type D — Long Stay National Visa

For stays exceeding 90 days in one specific country. A different process — you apply for this separately from the country you intend to live in.

Which Country to Apply To?

A key rule: apply to the consulate of your main destination country. If you’re spending most of your trip in Italy, apply to the Italian consulate. If you’re transiting through multiple countries equally, apply to the country of first entry.

You cannot just pick any country’s consulate — the application must go to the country where you’ll spend the most time.

Documents Required for Indians

Requirements vary slightly by country but the standard list includes:

Mandatory documents:

  • Valid passport (must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for 3 months beyond your planned return)
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (35×45mm, white background)
  • Visa fee payment (€80 for adults)
  • Travel itinerary (flight bookings, hotel reservations)
  • Travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage, valid across all Schengen countries)

Financial documents:

  • Bank statements for the last 3–6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Income proof (salary slips, IT returns, business registration)
  • Sponsorship letter if someone else is funding your trip

Employment/status documents:

  • Employed: Leave sanction letter, employment contract
  • Self-employed: Business registration, bank statements
  • Student: Enrollment letter, NOC from institution
  • Retired: Pension proof

Additional for some countries:

  • Hotel bookings for entire duration
  • Return flight bookings
  • Cover letter explaining the purpose and itinerary of your trip

Processing Time and Fees

  • Standard processing: 15 calendar days (can be up to 45 days in complex cases)
  • Apply at least 3–4 weeks before travel
  • Visa fee: €80 for adults (€40 for children 6–12, free under 6)
  • VFS Global service fee: Additional fee depending on city

The 90-Day Rule for Indians

Once your Schengen visa is approved, the same 90/180 day rolling window applies. Your visa may be valid for 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years — but you can only spend 90 days inside Schengen in any given 180-day period.

This means:

  • A 5-year multiple-entry visa doesn’t let you live in Europe
  • Each trip draws from your 90-day allowance
  • Old trips drop off after 180 days, refreshing your allowance

EES and Indian Travelers in 2026

The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) launched April 10, 2026. For Indians:

First visit after April 2026: Provide fingerprints and facial scan at the border. This is separate from the fingerprints already taken during your visa application — EES creates a new travel biometric profile.

Subsequent visits: Your passport scan logs entry and exit automatically.

Important: EES tracks your days precisely. With a multiple-entry visa, it’s easy to lose track of how many days you’ve accumulated across several trips. Always calculate before each trip.

Getting a Multiple-Entry Visa

First-time Schengen applicants from India typically receive a single-entry visa. After building a travel history, you can request multiple-entry visas:

  • 2-year multiple entry: After one or two previous Schengen visas
  • 5-year multiple entry: After demonstrating regular travel and compliance

The key to upgrading your visa type is a clean travel record — never overstay, always have complete documentation, and apply consistently.

ETIAS for Indians

Indians currently need a Schengen visa, not ETIAS. ETIAS is only for visa-free nationalities. This is not expected to change — India is not on track for Schengen visa-free access in the near term.

Top Schengen Destinations for Indian Travelers

France: Paris remains the most visited Schengen destination for Indians. Visa process through VFS Global.

Germany: Major destination for business and education. Indian diaspora provides strong social networks.

Italy: Rome, Venice, Florence — extremely popular for tourism. Growing Indian student population.

Switzerland: High on Indian bucket lists. Apply to Swiss authorities.

Netherlands: Amsterdam and Schiphol as a gateway hub. Active Indian business community.

Spain: Growing rapidly as a tourist destination among younger Indian travelers.

Tips for a Successful Application

Apply early. During summer (June–August) and winter holiday (December–January) seasons, appointment slots fill quickly. Apply 6–8 weeks in advance during peak periods.

Be honest and consistent. Any inconsistencies between your application, documents, and previous travel history can trigger rejection.

Show strong ties to India. Property ownership, family, employment, and financial ties all demonstrate you have reasons to return — which is what visa officers want to see.

Don’t book non-refundable tickets before getting your visa. Book flexible/refundable options until your visa is approved.

Use official VFS centres. VFS Global handles most Schengen visa applications in India. Book appointments at the official VFS website — avoid third-party agents who may add unnecessary fees.
